Class: infective, Antiviral |
Action Inhibits viral replication cycle in various strains of influenza A virus.
Adults
Prophylaxis and treatment of infection caused by various strains of influenza A virus.
Children
Prophylaxis against influenza A virus.
Contraindications Hypersensitivity to drugs of adamantine class including rimantadine and amantadine.
Prophylaxis and Treatment
ADULTS: PO 100 mg bid.
ELDERLY Nursing Home Patients, Hepatic and Renal Impairment (Ccr < 10 mL/min): Reduce to 100 mg/day.
Prophylaxis
CHILDREN ³ 10 yr: PO 100 mg bid.
CHILDREN < 10 yr: PO 5 mg/kg/day (max, 150 mg/dose).
Acetaminophen, Aspirin
Decreased peak serum concentration of rimantadine.
Cimetidine
Increased serum concentration caused by decreased clearance.
Lab Test Interferences None well documented.
CNS: Insomnia; dizziness; headache; nervousness; asthenia; impaired concentration. EENT: Eye pain. GI: Nausea; vomiting; anorexia; dry mouth; abdominal pain.
Pregnancy: Category C. Lactation: Undetermined. Do not administer to nursing mothers. Children: Safety and efficacy for prophylaxis not established in children < 1 yr. Elderly: CNS symptoms may occur more frequently. Seizures: Increased incidence of seizures in patients with seizure history and who receive amantadine.
